Set up payment providers

To start accepting payments from customers on your Shopify store, you need to configure at least one payment provider. A payment provider (also known as a payment gateway) securely processes credit cards, digital wallets, and other payment methods during checkout.

This guide will show you how to set up Shopify Payments, third-party gateways (like PayPal, Stripe), and alternative/manual payment methods.

Choosing the Right Payment Provider

Before configuring, consider these options based on your business location and target audience:

  • Shopify Payments: The easiest option with no extra transaction fees. Available in supported countries.
  • Third-Party Gateways: Essential if Shopify Payments is not available in your region.
  • PayPal: One of the most trusted and widely used Express checkouts globally.
  • Manual Payments: Cash on Delivery (COD), Bank Transfers, or Money Orders.

Step 1: Access Payment Settings

  1. Log in to your Shopify Admin Dashboard.
  2. Click on Settings (the gear icon) at the bottom left corner.
  3. Select Payments from the left navigation menu.

Step 2: Activate a Payment Provider

Option A: Set up Shopify Payments (Recommended)

If Shopify Payments is available in your country, activating it allows you to accept major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, AMEX) and digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay) immediately.

  1. In the Shopify Payments section, click Activate Shopify Payments.
  2. Fill in your business details:
  3. Input your Bank Account information (where Shopify will send your payouts).
  4. Click Complete setup.

Option B: Set up PayPal Express Checkout

PayPal is automatically created with your Shopify account email, but you must complete the setup to claim your funds.

  1. In the Supported payment methods section, find PayPal.
  2. Click Manage or Activate.
  3. Click Activate PayPal Express Checkout.
  4. You will be redirected to PayPal. Log in to your existing PayPal Business account (or create a new one) and click Agree and Connect to link it back to Shopify.

Option C: Activate Third-Party Payment Gateways (Stripe, 2Checkout, etc.)

If you cannot use Shopify Payments, you can choose from hundreds of alternative credit card processors.

  1. Scroll down to the Third-party payment providers or Alternative payment methods section.
  2. Click Choose a provider (or See all provider options).
  3. Search for and select your preferred provider (e.g., Stripe, Razorpay, Paystack).
  4. Enter your account credentials (usually an API Key, Merchant ID, or Secret Key) provided by that third-party gateway.
  5. Click Activate.

Step 3: Configure Manual Payment Methods (Optional)

If your market relies heavily on cash or local bank transfers, you can set up manual payment rules.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the Payments page to the Manual payment methods section.
  2. Click Add manual payment method and choose from:
  3. Provide instructions that your customers will see at checkout (e.g., your bank account details and how to send a transfer receipt).
  4. Click Activate.

Step 4: Choose Payment Capture Method

Shopify allows you to decide when to collect money from your customer's card:

  1. Look for the Payment capture method section on the same Payments page.
  2. Click Manage.
  3. Choose between:
  4. Click Save.

💡 Pro Tips for a Smooth Launch

  • Test Mode: Before launching your store, turn on Test Mode (available in Shopify Payments or third-party settings) to simulate a successful checkout without spending real money. Remember to turn it off before accepting real customers!
  • Avoid Double Fees: If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, note that Shopify charges an additional transaction fee (0.5% to 2% depending on your Shopify plan).
