Add shipping methods
Setting up your shipping methods correctly is a crucial step to ensure a smooth checkout experience for your customers. In Shopify, you can create flexible shipping rates based on order value, weight, or flat rates, and even offer free shipping.
This guide will walk you through the process of configuring shipping zones and methods in your Shopify admin.
Step 1: Access Shipping and Delivery Settings
- Log in to your Shopify Admin Dashboard.
- Click on Settings (the gear icon) located at the bottom left corner of the page.
- Select Shipping and delivery from the left-hand menu.
Step 2: Create or Edit a Shipping Profile
By default, Shopify creates a General shipping rates profile that applies to all your products.
- In the Shipping section, click on General (or Manage next to the profile you want to edit).
- If you want to create unique shipping rules for specific products (e.g., heavy items, fragile goods), you can click Create new profile instead.
Step 3: Create a Shipping Zone
A shipping zone is a group of countries or regions that share the same shipping rates.
- Scroll down to the Shipping zones section.
- Click Create zone.
- Enter a Zone name (e.g., "Domestic", "North America", or "International"). This name is only for your reference and won't be seen by customers.
- Use the search bar to select the countries or regions you want to include in this zone.
- Click Done.
Step 4: Add Shipping Rates (Methods)
Now that you have a zone, you can add specific shipping methods to it. Click Add rate under the zone you just created, then choose one of the following options:
Option A: Set Up Flat Rates
Flat rates allow you to charge a fixed amount for shipping.
- Choose Set up your own rates.
- Enter the Rate name (e.g., "Standard Shipping", "Express Delivery"). This name will be visible to customers at checkout.
- Set the Price for the shipping method.
- (Optional) Click Add conditions to limit this rate based on:
- Click Done.
Option B: Set Up Free Shipping
Offering free shipping is a great way to boost sales and reduce cart abandonment.
- Follow the same steps as a Flat Rate.
- Set the Price to
$0.00. - Click Add conditions $\rightarrow$ select Based on order price.
- Set the Minimum price (e.g., Free shipping for orders over $75).
- Click Done.
Option C: Use Carrier-Calculated Rates
If you want to pass real-time shipping costs from carriers (like FedEx, UPS, or DHL) directly to your customers:
- Choose Use carrier or app to calculate rates.
- Select your preferred shipping service from the dropdown menu.
- Select the specific shipping services you want to offer (e.g., Ground, Next Day Air).
- (Optional) Add a Handling fee if you want to charge a little extra for packaging.
- Click Done.
Step 5: Save Your Changes
Once you have configured all your shipping zones and rates, don't forget to click the Save button at the top right corner of the screen.
