Duplicate a Theme
Duplicating a Shopify theme creates a copy of your existing theme. This is useful for testing changes, editing code, or creating a backup without affecting your live store.
The duplicated theme will appear in your Theme Library as:
Copy of [Theme Name]
How to duplicate a Shopify theme
Step 1: Open the Themes page
In your Shopify admin, go to:
Online Store → Themes
Step 2: Find the theme
Locate the theme you want to duplicate.
This can be:
- Your live theme
- An unpublished theme in the Theme Library
Step 3: Duplicate the theme
Click:
Actions → Duplicate
Shopify will create a copy of the theme automatically.
The duplicated version will appear in your Theme Library after a few seconds.
Why duplicate a theme?
Duplicating a theme is recommended before:
- Editing theme code
- Installing new apps
- Updating a theme
- Testing design changes
- Making major customizations
This gives you a backup version you can restore if needed.
Important notes
The duplicate includes all settings
The copied theme will include:
- Theme settings
- Layouts
- Sections
- Code customizations
- Navigation structure
It is an exact copy at the time of duplication.
Shopify theme limit
Shopify allows up to 20 themes in your Theme Library.
If you reach the limit, you may need to delete unused themes before duplicating another one.
