Duplicate a Theme

Duplicating a Shopify theme creates a copy of your existing theme. This is useful for testing changes, editing code, or creating a backup without affecting your live store.

The duplicated theme will appear in your Theme Library as:

Copy of [Theme Name]

How to duplicate a Shopify theme

Step 1: Open the Themes page

In your Shopify admin, go to:

Online Store → Themes

Step 2: Find the theme

Locate the theme you want to duplicate.

This can be:

  • Your live theme
  • An unpublished theme in the Theme Library

Step 3: Duplicate the theme

Click:

Actions → Duplicate

Shopify will create a copy of the theme automatically.

The duplicated version will appear in your Theme Library after a few seconds.

Why duplicate a theme?

Duplicating a theme is recommended before:

  • Editing theme code
  • Installing new apps
  • Updating a theme
  • Testing design changes
  • Making major customizations

This gives you a backup version you can restore if needed.

Important notes

The duplicate includes all settings

The copied theme will include:

  • Theme settings
  • Layouts
  • Sections
  • Code customizations
  • Navigation structure

It is an exact copy at the time of duplication.

Shopify theme limit

Shopify allows up to 20 themes in your Theme Library.

If you reach the limit, you may need to delete unused themes before duplicating another one.
